French WWI Postcard – Mulhouse Patriotic / Military Scene – Original
€3.95
Out of stock
Original First World War postcard from France, dated circa 1914-1920.
Featuring a partiotic scene refering to the battle of Mulhouse, which was the opening offensive launched by the French army on the 7th of August 1914. Covering a wider plan to recover the area of Alsace which was lost during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, Mulhouse was captured by the French before recaptured by the German army within the same month. The offensive had to be discontinued due to heavy losses on other parts of the front during the hectic first weeks of the first world war. The capture of Mulhouse represents the fighting spirit of the French army (also known as élan), and was therefore proudly represented on this postcard, serving as semi-propoganda.
A beautiful and atmospheric piece of early 20th-century wartime history.
