Historical Context – Verdun 1916

The Battle of Verdun (February–December 1916) was one of the most devastating battles of World War I.

Verdun became a symbol of endurance for France. The city and surrounding villages were subjected to relentless artillery bombardment, resulting in near-total destruction of civilian infrastructure, including churches, homes, and public buildings.

Images of ruined churches were particularly powerful during the war. They symbolized:

  • The scale of destruction

  • Cultural loss

  • The total nature of modern industrial warfare

German-issued postcards such as this one were circulated during the war, documenting battlefield conditions and the effects of heavy bombardment.

Verdun remains one of the most iconic battlefields of the Western Front.
