Historical Context – Verdun, 1916
The Battle of Verdun (February–December 1916) became one of the defining battles of the First World War.
German forces launched a major offensive aiming to exhaust French resistance. The result was nearly ten months of relentless artillery bombardment and infantry combat.
Entire districts of Verdun were devastated. Buildings were reduced to skeletal remains, and churches, homes, and civic structures were destroyed or heavily damaged.
Scenes such as this — with figures standing amid the rubble — reflect the scale of destruction and the human presence within a shattered landscape.
German-produced Verdun postcards were issued during the war both as documentation and as visual evidence of battlefield conditions on the Western Front.
